I like this modern representation of the legend associated with St. Patrick. I especially like the reference to Michael Flatley (see the writing on the snakes).

A major part of the legend of St Patrick is that he drove all snakes out of Ireland forever. Of course this is probably just a metaphor for the fact that he drove out pagan beliefs and rituals, which are commonly associated with snakes.

I have photographed all the parades since 1996 but this year my request for media accreditation was rejected (I must have upset someone) and this presented me with a major problem. Without proper access it is almost impossible to photograph the actual St. Patrick's Day parade because people keep getting in the way.

The only option open to me was to arrive three hours before the parade began and to photograph the behind-the-scene preparations. This proved to be rather interesting as I got meet some of the performers.

This year I did not use a DSLR camera.
I used a Sony NEX-5 and a Sony NEX-VG10 Camcorder the videos are available on YouTube.

The Dearborn High School Marching Band

The Dearborn High School Marching band is one of the most prestigious in the state of Michigan. Consisting of about 110 members annually, they are an average-sized high school band, and can hold their own against the large bands of 200 members or more. They perform at every home game, and send a pep band to playoff games. The band has received the highest ratings at the MSBOA Marching Band festival in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. They are ranked in the highest division as a class AA band. The band often plays at local venues, as well as community events and is available for hire all year round. They have played a variety of half-time shows in the past, including Styx, The Doors, Santana, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Swing Songs, and West Side Story and have performed in the Michigan Thanksgiving Day Parade in Detroit, and annually in the City of Dearborn's traditional Memorial Day Parade. In 2008 the Band was selected to participate in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C. In 2010, the Band was selected to participate in a marching band contest being held in Ireland.

Unfortunately my application for access to photograph this year's St. Patrick's Festival was rejected and as a result I found it very difficult to photograph the Ceili which took place today at the corner of St. Stephen's Green. The main problem was my view was blocked most of the time. Anyway, I do hope that the photographs that I have made available captured some of the the atmosphere.

The event started at 5.00pm and it offered an interesting and fun filled family friendly way to spend an afternoon dancing your heart away. Expert callers lead the crowd (the majority appeared to be non-Irish) through dances such as the Siege of Ennis, the Walls of Limerick.
Irish Dancing star Dearbhla Lennon of Riverdance fame was joined by dancers and musicians from Siamsa Tíre, Irelands National Folk Theatre and Arts Centre, Céilí caller Jerry O’Reilly, dancers from the internationally acclaimed Brookes Academy, and award-winning fiddle and concertina player Niamh Ní Charra and friends.
I used a Sony NEX-5 and while I really like the camera not having a viewfinder makes it very difficult to check focus.

Lord Mayor’s State Coach (The State Coach of the Lord Mayor of Dublin)

The Lord Mayor's Coach was built in 1789 by William Whitton, of Dominick Street, and made its first appearance on the streets of Dublin on 4 November 1791 in an annual event to mark the birthday of William III. The elaborately decorated coach far exceeded its original budget and was completed for a total cost of £2,690 13s 5d. The Coach was used for ceremonial occasions up until 1932 when, due to its poor condition, it was placed in storage. Following expert restoration, the Coach returned to public life in 1976 and is a feature of Dublin’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.

G. 6 out of 6 found this review helpful This is a gem of a book---superb photography (albeit with occasionally poor layout) and congenial, informative writing. It will appeal to anyone who feels that elegance and shabbiness can blend well. The only significant flaw is that the home exterior photos are sparse and inadequate, and in one case missing. Decent exterior shots of a home are vital to appreciate fully that home's internal style. It's also ironic that many of the homes discussed bear a strong Anglo-Irish influence, yet the term "Anglo-Irish" seems to be absent from the text. But I'm very glad to have this book, and give it 8.5 out of 10.

This year’s St Patrick’s Festival is set to finish on a high note thanks to renowned Irish musician Donal Lunny who will curate and participate in A Celebration of Irish Voices on Wednesday 17th March in the National Concert Hall.

A Celebration of Irish Voices is an opportunity to hear two of Ireland's most important choirs, each of which has its own distinctive style, each of which draws directly from the great well of the Sean-Nós singing tradition accompanied by one of Ireland’s best know traditional musician’s and composers Donal Lunny.

Cór Taobh A' Leithéid is led by Dominic Mac Giolla Bhríde, who himself won the Corn Uí Riada for solo Sean-Nós singing at this year's Oireachtas. The beloved Cór Cúl Aodh will be led by Peadar Ó Riada.

The evening will also feature performances by two very distinctive female vocalists, Roisin Elsafty and Eithne Ni Chathain, in what will undoubtedly be a memorable night of Irish voices and a substantial and uplifting evening of traditional Irish music and song.

Dublin’s Cultural Quarter, Temple Bar, will play host to an inspiring visual art trail “Shop If You Can Look If You Want” as part of St. Patrick’s Festival this year. This exhibition will showcase some of the interesting existing public art, spaces and places in the Temple Bar area, and also present twenty one Irish and international artists and their work. All the exhibited work has been selected as a response to the economic climate that Ireland and many other countries in the world are presently experiencing. The sites of commerce and culture find themselves in a moment of confused transition where the abiding sense is that of uncertainty of the next step. The exhibitions reflect this ambience by occupying vacant retail spaces.

“Shop If You Can, Look If You Want” is curated by Jonathan Carroll in conjunction with The Temple Bar Cultural Trust and is an opportunity for visitors and Dubliners alike to experience some of our finest urban artists as part of the Festival celebrations.

The artists exhibiting are Aoife Casey (IE), Hugo Canolias (PRT), Mark Clare (UK/IE), Joost Conijn (NL), Amanda Coogan (IE), Roisin Beirne (IE) Hartmut Bitomsky (DE), Jeanette Doyle (IE), Gillian Fitzpatrick (IE), Michael Fortune (IE) Karl Grimes (IE), Deirdre Judge (IE), John Kenny (IE), Nevan Lahart (IE) Sean Lynch (IE), Yuki Okumura (JPN), Magnhild Opdøl (NOR), Jorge Satorre (MEX/ES) and Sonia Shiel (IE), Joe Stanley (IE), and Sharon White (IE)

Entrance into the exhibitions is free to all and this visual trail aims to incorporate existing artwork and cultural centres in the Temple Bar Cultural Quarter with a variety of art installations and activities in newly vacant retail units. Three vacant retail units will be home to five themed art spaces for the duration of the Festival. The principal idea being that Temple Bar is always worth visiting. There are things worth rediscovering and often the unexpected can appear from an area you thought you knew.

A total of twenty artists were invited to contribute art to one of a series of “Non-Shop’ spaces which include a ‘Non-Car-Showroom” and a “Non-Taxidermy”. Work form these artists will also be projected in Meeting House Square outdoor cinema throughout the Festival.

“Bottom Gear Driving through the recession” is the ‘Non-Shops” idea and is exemplified in the ‘Non-Car Showroom”, in Girls School@ Smock Alley Theatre, Essex

Our national celebration, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the highlights of the year for the Irish and those who wish they were Irish! And all the Irish eyes will be looking at the world famous St. Patrick’s Festival Parade, taking place on Wednesday 17^th March through Dublin city centre.

Our national day has become a worldwide celebration in many major cities across the globe and no more so than in our capital city. Wednesday 17^th March will see the streets of Dublin transformed with the thousands of performers, characters and spectators that will take part in the greatest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the world.

The theme for this year’s Festival Parade is ‘The Extraordinary World’ which has been interpreted by many street theatre pageant companies and will see an estimated 3,000 performers take to our streets. Uniquely commissioned and original pageants, performers and marching bands from all corners of the globe will wow some 650,000 people that are expected to line the 3km route, not forgetting the many millions more who will tune into the RTE 1 TV broadcast and the live RTE web-stream.

Providing live commentary along the parade route is sports presenter, Des Cahill and presenting the Festival Parade live on RTE 1 is Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh and Aidan Power.

Leading the parade as Grand Marshal this year will be International Soccer legend, Packie Bonner who is recognised as one of the finest contributors to Irish sporting history. Packie made his international debut on his 21^st birthday in 1981 against Poland and went on to write his name into Irish football history on many occasions over the next 13 years and became first choice for Ireland winning 80 caps

As Grand Marshal, Packie will begin his honorary duties on the day with a VIP celebratory breakfast in The Marks and Spencer’s Rooftop Restaurant on Grafton Street. From there he will be chauffeur-driven to the start of the Parade on Parnell Square to begin the journey through the heaving city streets. Once he has travelled the 3 km route he will finish up his day as the guest of honour at an official VIP lunch.

Eight pageant groups from Ireland and beyond will make up this year’s Festival Parade, which will wow some 650,000 people, each featuring their individual interpretations of ‘The Extraordinary World’ theme, transforming our capital’s streets into a kaleidoscope

St. Patrick's Festival Parade Tomorrow!

Here in Dublin we are all getting ready for St. Patrick's Day.

visitors have already been given the opportunity to be immersed in Irish culture and craic (the Irish for fun) every day since last Friday but for the more adventurous the St. Patrick's Festival Céilí gave them the opportunity to dance in the street.

Music was supplied courtesy of Pádraig Ó Sé, Gary O'Brien and friends, and FIDIL, the multiple-award winning Donegal fiddle players (Aidan O'Donnell, Damien McGeehan and Ciaran Ó Maoinigh). The Cunningham family mesmerized with sean-nós and step-dancing. Expert callers lead dancers through the Siege of Ennis, the Walls of Limerick and plenty more, and there were plenty of spot-prize. While I was there a gentleman from Switzerland won a prize for his Michael Flatley impression.
